Assessment of ongoing environmental change and its consequences

Beneficiary:

Objectives:

  1. Monitoring of latitudinal and landward shifts in mangrove vegetation due to (in)direct climate changes by means of remote sensing, GIS techniques, and field surveys.
  2. Detection of latitudinal limits of mangrove tree species.
  3. Detection of climatic determinants for the limitation of mangrove associated fauna.
  4. Quantification of species gains and losses caused by climate changes.


Responses (physiological and morphological) of organisms to environmental change

Beneficiary:

  • VUB, UFPA, UNIFI, INECOL, RU, TUD

Objectives:

  1. Detection of physiological responses of mangrove trees to environmental change and its effects on growth rates.
  2. Functional anatomy of mangrove trees, its role in ecology and adaptations of biogeographic scale.
  3. Definition of physiological tolerance and adaptive physiological plasticity of mangrove crab populations at their latitudinal limits.
  4. Detection of physiological responses of selected mangrove crabs to change in key environmental factors (pH and salinity alterations).
  5. Evaluation of the effect of climate change on the maternal behavior and embryo physiology of mangrove crab populations.


Responses of populations to environmental changes

Beneficiary:

Objectives:

  1. Investigate the link between recruitment of mangrove propagules, tidal regime, and (micro)topography
  2. Estimate fertility and reproductive potential of mangrove crab populations at their latitudinal limits
  3. Describe larval recruitment patterns of mangrove crab populations at their latitudinal limits and study their timing and determinants


Responses of communities to environmental changes

Beneficiary:

  • SERC, UQ, TUD

Objectives:

  1. Examining differences among mangrove communities in their responses to nutrient-enrichment along a latitudinal gradient in the neotopics.
  2. Identify enrichment affects of mangrove tree growth and tissue quality.
  3. Relate these affects to herbivory, and tree metabolic processes.


Modelling and forecasting

Beneficiary:

  • TUD, ULB, UQ

Objectives:

  1. Identification of functional groups of mangrove species according to their functional traits.
  2. Assessing the relative importance of plant-plant interactions to the velocity of ecotone shifts
  3. Understanding the relationship between mangrove species dominance and long-term changes in environmental conditions.


Project management and monitoring

Beneficiary:

  • TUD, ULB, VUB, UNIFI, SERC, UFPA, RU, UQ

Objectives:

  1. Co-ordinate the overall project and the activities of the Project Co-ordination Committee;
  2. Provide the interface with the European Commission and other stakeholders;
  3. Carry out the contractual management;
  4. Distribute the financial contribution of the Commission according to the contract and the budget allocation decided by the Project Co-ordination Committee;
